Spain hotel pips Burj Khalifa to win skyscraper award

The Hotel Porta Fira in Barcelona has won this year’s Emporis Skyscraper Award for completed buildings over 100m, at the expense of second place Burj Khalifa.

Hotel Porta Fira was designed by Japanese firm Toyo Ito & Associates and Spanish practice b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos. It was constructed by Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC), a the Spain-based infrastructure and environmental services company.

The 113m-tall tower was chosen from over 300 competing skyscrapers around the world. According to the jury, the hotel was selected for its aesthetic beauty and urban integration.

“The biggest challenge of the skyscraper is its organic design. The façade of red aluminium tubes form continuous lines enclosing the complex geometry of the building, which twists and increases in size as it rises,” stated architect Fermín Vázquez.
