An extension and new facade for the ABC Dbayeh department store in Beirut, designed by nARCHITECTS, is due for completion in late autumn 2011.
Located on Lebanon’s highway bordering the Mediterranean, the project contains four volumes that cascade down the sloped site and terminate in an LED-backlit laser-cut aluminium screen.
The screen will shade the department store and reduce heat gain on the building’s western exposure.
Waste from the aluminum cut-outs is used as a cladding element throughout the remaining three volumes.
The double skin varies in depth from 0.5m to 2.5m to accommodate new displays, entrances, glazing and canopies.
