Pictures: Award-winning Beirut tower

Accent Design Group has shared its design for Beirut Observatory, which won this year’s WAN Residential Award in the unbuilt category.

Located in the centre of the Lebanese capital, the 11,000m2 tower is composed of a smoothly rising stack of glazed-unit apartments.

The project beat entries from Italy, China, Estonia, Canada, Sweden and Norway.

The panel of seven judges was impressed by the opposition of form between the front and back façades, the double height spaces in the middle of the tower and the cantilevered balconies.

Shading louvers protect from the excessive eastern and western exposure while adding privacy and providing an opportunity for a vertical ‘green’ screen that acts as a unifying element on the façade.

The WAN Residential Awards scheme is run by UK based website World Architecture News and celebrates the best in international architecture for residential use.
