Doha’s Sports City Stadium for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, could be the most expensive stadium ever built according to architect Populous.
SportsBusiness Journal reported that Dan Meis, stadium designer and senior principal at Populous, said that costs may soar to over $2 billion.
Currently the world’s most expensive stadia are London’s 90,000-seat Wembley Stadium and the 80,000 Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, which both cost around $1.3 billion. In comparison, London’s 80,000-capacity Olympic Stadium, a venue designed by Populous and opened last month, cost about $867 million to build.
The design team, which also includes Aedas, said that Sports City Stadium will be the “most flexible, technologically sophisticated and environmentally sustainable stadium the world has ever seen”.
The sophisticated cooling technology required to combat the Gulf state’s heat and protect players and fans is one of the big budget items.
Meis said that the huge cost would be due to the building’s function as a year-round entertainment venue, which will include a shopping mall, as well as office, retail and media facilities.
