SOM’s US Air Force project flies high

Air Force Academy

A sustainable academy building for the  United States Air Force, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has been hailed by US and European institutions.

The academy centre for Character and Leadership Development (CCLD) won an International Architecture Award from the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum.

Located in a National Historic Landmark District in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, CCLD will be a nexus of activity for cadets, professors and visitors. The project integrates advanced building systems and anticipates LEED Platinum certification.

A 32m-tall skylight over the main gathering area will remain in precise optical alignment with the North Star, the symbolic instrument of cadet navigation, regardless of the season or time of day.

Jury deliberations for the award took place in Warsaw, Poland, under the supervision of The Association of Polish Architects.

SOM has a long history with the Air Force Academy, having designed the 1954 master plan for the iconic campus.
