In pictures: Construction underway for Zaha Hadid-designed Opus tower in Dubai

Zaha Hadid’s Dubai-based The Opus tower is shaping up after almost a decade of design and construction work.

The mixed-use building was first launched in 2005, and later put on hold due to the economic crisis.

The building includes a hotel, dining venues and residential apartments – but its main feature is a central “void”, modelled on what might happen to an ice cube left out in the summer midday sun.

Its pilexated reflective facade renders it fully visible by day, but as night falls light is absorbed and it appears to slowly disappear from view.

“We started off with two towers but fused them and included a central space” said associate director at ZHA, Christos Passas. “This is as important as the building itself – showing presence and absence and light and dark.”
