Key Concept-designed cafe and retail space is inspired by women’s modern majlis

The recently completed cafe and retail outlet, The Living Room, located in Mercato Mall, Jumeirah by Dubai-based design firm Key Concept is an amalgamation of elegance, textures and colours.

The brief was to create a visually memorable social space inspired by the cultural brand values of the fashion brand FMM Dubai. The 50m2 space was highly inspired by the women’s majlis room, private lounging space for female members of the family, which provides a setting for social gathering and conversations.

It has been reinterpreted in the contemporary context of a commercial environment, resulting in a cosy setting in an unexpected place. The coffee and dessert bar, add more value to the retail concept. It also doubles as an intimate co-working space which inspires creativity.

Even though there is a high concentration of pink in a small space – pink-painted walls, pink velvet sofa and metal copper trims on the coffee bar and even in the fixtures, the varied application creates a texture-rich atmosphere.

The oak wood floors in herringbone pattern, the white Carrara marble-clad bar and the turquoise chairs bring a much needed balance to the colour scheme. A combination of the exposed ceiling in cement screed finish, highlighted by the moulding details in pink gives off a contrast that is understated yet very sophisticated. The special installation, made of copper-painted palm leaves suspended and scattered all throughout the ceiling void add traditional influences harking back to the olden days, when the majlis was built with more traditional materials including dried palm fronds.
