Tehran’s 4 Architecture Studio designs a men’s hair spa inspired by traditional barbershops

VIP Hair Club designed by Tehran-based 4 Architecture Studio, founded by four architects Kasra ShafieeZadeh, Hossein ZeinAghaji, Mohammad Yousef Salehi and Aidin Voskah, offers a modern take on the traditional barbershop. The team was tasked with converting a dilapidated building located between a tennis court complex and open green spaces within the Enghelab Sports Complex.

Inspired by the traditional barbershop concept, the architects reimagined the space based on the various functions expected of a hair styling spa, while also preserving the symmetry of the original blueprint of the structure.

Taking advantage of the scenic views of the adjoining tennis courts and green spaces, the design team decided to place the styling seats facing the tennis courts, while the mirrors in front provided a view of the greenery at the back, effectively allowing the utilisation of landscapes on both sides. It also helped cut down the cost of the project.

The symmetrical approach provided a unique potential. Revolving around an axis of symmetry, the interior architects were able to play with shapes and images portrayed in mirrors. Actual walls and windows aligned with mirrors which blur and blend the seams between reality and perceived visual effects.

Using neutral colour palette, it emphasises and draws focus from the environment and puts the attention on the clients. One of the highlights is the ochre-coloured scooter, as well as thoughtfully-curated selection of plants which make the barbershop feel like an extension of the verdant space outside.
