Winner of LG Conceptualife 2011 lands internship with Dubai-based X-Architects

A 22-year-old student based in Turkey, Tolga Tekin, won the LG Conceptualife 2011 awards after competing against 11 other student designers.

Tekin, from Turkey’s Marmara University in Istanbul, won a fully paid one-month internship at Dubai-based design firm X-Architects, along with $5,000 and an LG Optimus smartphone.

“I still cannot believe I am holding this award – I am on top of the world and now, am even more confident that I will be a successful designer who can make a difference,” said Tekin.

“My project name is Waveset, which was inspired by sea and sand waves. These natural forms provide an efficient energy circulation,” he said.

Tekin said he tried to integrate this energy circulation concept into all of the products he designed, such as the fridge and dishwasher, and also the green house area.  In addition to this, he worked on a new built-in eco friendly washer and dryer for vegetables and fruit.

He was confident about winning, and is very excited to complete his internship at X-Architects in Dubai. “I am very excited to come to Dubai, and look forward to meeting all the designers who live here. This is a great move for my career – I want to focus on interior design with renewable resources and sustainability. I also want to explore restaurant and hotel design, and hope I get the opportunity to do this,” he added.

“I particularly liked Tolga Tekin’s design, as it integrated technology with cutting-edge design albeit with a human touch. I felt this design was the most applicable and it would be very interesting to push this concept forward,” added Ahmed Al Ali, founder and executive chairman, X-Architects.

Ali added he felt young talent and creativity needed to be developed, which is why his firm offered the winner an internship.

The first runner up was also from Turkey – Serdar Soyal from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul, while the second runner up prize went to Karyn Schott from Greenside Design Center in Johannesburg, South Africa. In addition to an LG Optimus smartphone, they were both given $3,000 and $2,000 respectively from LG.

“It was a difficult task to pick the top three designs. Most of the designs were presented as concepts but it is only a matter of time before these futuristic green kitchen solutions are recognised and adopted. I am pleased to see how well our aspiring designers of tomorrow understand the importance of an environmentally sound kitchen design and appliances which is also one of LG’s key objectives,” said KW Kim, president, LG Electronics, MEA region.

Twelve designers from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, Egypt and Iran, showcased their shortlisted designs of eco-friendly kitchens and appliances to a panel of judges at the award ceremony held at DUCTAC, Mall of the Emirates.

The concepts were judged based on uniqueness of design and use of innovative green features, best use of kitchen space, environmental friendliness, usage of materials and functionality.
