Dubai Frame gets gold cladding

Gold cladding has started to be attached to the Dubai Frame – the latest addition to the city’s skyline which is designed to offer panoramic views of the historic Creek and Deira areas and the contrasting steel and glass skyscrapers of Downtown.

The two 150m high, 93m wide towers are connected by a 100m bridge, which has a motif inscribed on it inspired by the Expo 2020 logo.

Construction work started at the end of 2013 and in recent weeks have been working around the clock to install the last few details, such as the gold stainless steel cladding.

According to Dubai Municipality, the Frame will have interior spaces on the ground floor, with the horizontal rib at the base to showcase exhibitions which will display details of old Dubai and how the city has evolved since the sixties and until today.

A spokesperson said: “[The Frame will be] an important attraction point for tourist visitors and residents alike, and is expected to attract nearly 2 million tourists a year.”

Interactive screens will help tourists recognise buildings and landmarks and will give facts and information about each while the mezzanine level will illustrate the future of Dubai.

“The concept of this gallery is to depict Dubai 50 years from now into the future by creating a virtual metropolis through interactive projections and virtual reality technology,” the municipality said.

The ground floor ends at the main panoramic elevator, which goes up through the rib of the Frame to get to the top floor.

At the top, visitors will have a view of old Dubai as they look towards Al Karama, Umm Hurair, Bur Dubai and Deira, and as they turn around, will see the high-rise towers and development projects of new Dubai.

The project has been controversial, with original architect Fernando Donis claiming in a lawsuit the authorities violated his copyright and never completed a final contract for his services.
