Dubai is now home to a mid-century design gallery, offering furniture, lighting and other antique pieces straight out of the 50’s.
Mid-Century Modern Line Studio (MCML Studio) is a family-run business from France, now open in Dubai Design District with the aim of showcasing and educating clients about the value and significance of mid-century design, as well as becoming a reference in the region for design from the 50s to 70s.
The objects on show, from furniture to ceramics, glass and textiles, are all authentic pieces, sourced from various places, mostly Europe and Scandinavia, with some rare pieces from Brazil.
MCML Studio has within its collection some of the great names of the era including Alain Richard, Genevieve Dangles, Illum Wikkelso, Marco Zanuso and Jean Derval, among others.
Speaking of the importance and significance of the mid-century era, Hugo Rochette, head of branding and communication, said: “The mid-century modern period is fascinating. It was the age of dreams and optimism. In the post-war years, after all the chaos and crisis of a global conflict, the world began to rebuild and rethink itself. It was an era of hope, when many asserted their claims to freedom and gave voice to their ambitions, looking for new beginnings and possibilities.”
He continued: “For designers and architects, especially, it was an extraordinary time to be at work, and the opportunities for creativity and originality were widespread and welcome. In many respects, the patterns and expectations consumers in the mid-century period laid down the template for modern living itself and formed a foundation for our own lifestyles in the 21st century.”
Speaking of MCML’s presence in the UAE, Rochette explained: “Dubai has the best of everything. The best hotels, the best architectural designs, the best golf courses… We are simply trying to add to that and bring the best of mid-century interior design to the region.”
The gallery is located in Building 6, gallery B108.
