US-based textile manufacturer Burlington Technologies opened its first showroom in Business Bay, Dubai. BT is the parent company for different technology businesses, including BMS, Se7en, Verelli and Keystone Weaving, which it acquired last year. Both Se7en and Bentex primarily use synthetic yarns to manufacture their fabrics and Keystone relies upon natural fiber yarns such as cotton, linen and wool. Michael R. Durham, president of Burlington Technologies comments: “All of our fabrics are designed and manufactured in North Carolina, USA. While we serve residential and hospitality needs of our US customers, we have opened a new showroom in Dubai to better meet the needs of major projects that are either being built or specified out of the Dubai region. Sam Rayess, our MENA director, has been on the ground in Dubai since January of this year and is excited about our opportunities, especially within the hospitality sector.” Verelli, a line of woven wallcovering, is one of Burlington’s key products. Verelli is a high-performance fabric with features including intricate ornate patterns, anti-microbial, high UV and required FR performance. These products come with high-burst strength and easy-to-clean ability, which makes them ideal for high-traffic and highly visible areas such as lobbies, ballrooms and corridors. Bentex is Burlington’s contract fabrics division that produces privacy curtains, office panel systems and hospitality applications such as drapery, bedding, seating and other products for public space areas. 1/8The Solitaires collection and its inspirational objects are presented through distinctive handmade pieces, capturing the skills of Bohemian glass and created in collaboration with leading Czech designers. The Solitaires Collection consists of eight objects that exemplify the upcoming generation of Preciosa lighting: Souls, Muutos, Glory, Rings, Unité, Grid, Ray and Glow. Souls designed by Eva Eisler is created from Bohemian glass and perfected with innovative design encompassing purity. Showcasing the adaptability and malleability of crystal, Muutos lighting by Jaroslav Bejvl exemplifies the transformation of historical shapes into thoroughly modern designs. Molten glass is poured into 100-year-old molds and the partially frosted crystal is then stretched and formed to create sensuous shapes. Glory, another object designed by Bejvl, celebrates the art of glass cutting, featuring the diamond cut that allows light to reflect and shine through all sides. Rings is composed of five interlocking circles, forming a simple shape divided by horizontal lines. It is inspired by the natural beauty of crystal and perfected the art of hand cutting. The main idea for Unite by Klara Sumova is strength. The central concept was to place varying numbers of candles in bowls of different shapes, colours and cuts; to hold on to fragments of the chandeliers history while moving it into aesthetically new areas. The glass body of the Ray lamp, designed by Jakub Berdych, is made of crystal, which perfectly carries a glow of LED source. Glow by Martin Prokes marks the debut of a lighting element with endlessly adaptable and adjustable projection, decoration, intensity and colour. 2/8Shelter is a simple, yet characterful table lamp that emits a cosy light onto its surroundings. The conical shape of its base and the rounded shade provide a soft feel, adding a contrast to the clean and sharp lines of the lamp. Shelter was designed by the Danish design duo Holmbäck-Nordentoft. Shelter is a play on both proportions and details. It is available in a classic black or a limestone grey. Both the table and floor lamp create a cozy lighting atmosphere. Shelter is also well-suited as a reading lamp in the office or in the bedroom. Normann Copenhagen Tel: +45 3 5554459 www.normann-copenhagen.com
3/8The new Work is Over armchair expresses the sobriety of industrial style in its lines while drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of the military and construction sites in its extreme functionality. Structural parts that usually remain concealed are exposed to reveal all their beauty. The Work is Over concept is based on an ideal of hardness and rigidity that finally takes form in a soft, rounded object through the juxtaposition of straight and curved lines and the soft cushions that make the structure extremely comfortable. The armchair’s silhouette gives it a strong identity enhanced by the drilled sheet metal that has both structural and decorative purposes. The chair is available in different colours and finishes for adaptation to every style and interior. The indoor version can be upholstered in leather or woven fabric in order to emphasise the textural contrast and accent the beauty of the unworked material. Moroso Tel: +973 1 7590171 www.moroso.it
4/8The Block Party series is a simple way to add a lounge area that doubles as a social workspace. The collection has five pieces that can be mixed, matched and configured in four different ways: “The Corner Office,” “The Gilligan,” “The Shimmy” and “The Back it Up.” The product designers, Jeff Miller and David Branham, set out to create a grouping of pieces that facilitate conversation among employees and provide them with the option to take their work from the desk to the lounge. 5/8Inspired by a twisted folding meter stick, the designer, Florian Schmid, created Acco, an elegant dining table with a base made entirely in Canaletto walnut, perfect to give character to a decor. The table legs are an expanded version of folding meter stick, which gives a light and elegant impression. The geometric pattern of the wooden sticks gives the table a solid base, but at the same time keeps a lightweight appearance. Florian Schmid Tel: +49 1 6097674726 www.florian-schmid.com
6/8Stitching Concrete Stools are made by a folding fabric that is impregnated with a cement and then drenched in water. It consists of cement layered between the fabric and a PVC backing. Once soaked, it can be manipulated for a few hours before hardening. A wooden mould supports it while drying within 24 hours. Before that, the edges have been stitched together with brightly coloured thread. The Material combines the warm softness of the cloth and the stability of the cold concrete, but the finished surface keeps the soft appearance. After some testing on how to handle the material, Florian Schmid tried different patterns and stitchings. The Stools are for indoor and outdoor use. 7/8Designed by Lebanese designer Ghassan Salameh, the Sardine Can Closet is a simple and direct magnification of the sardine can, repurposed into a packing system in the form of a closet. This closet could be used as a multi-purpose shelving or a hanging system. The finishing follows also the industrial raw feel presented in all of the other products. Built out of black steel for both the skin and the foldable blades, it still holds the process of work in its final representation. Ghassan Salameh Tel: +961 3 691709 www.ghassansalameh.com
