Products of the month

Commercial Interior Design presents a collection of the best products of the month.

Glatzkopf

Ingo Maurer has given expression to the new ‘bald head’, which is based on a design from 1981. Glatzkopf a lampshade sits on a large glass bulb, which is fixed in the base plate via the frame and the rod. The lampshade, due to its asymmetrical form, is reminiscent of a cap and gives the fixture a certain dynamism. In the base plate are three holes, which allow the rod to be adjusted at different angles. The paper screen makes the light bulb visible through the hole. The light bulb itself is sandblasted on the top and is equipped with LED strings. Glatzkopf is offered as table or floor lamp.

Yakisugi by Kengo Kuma

Yakisugi, a brand new collaboration of Lasvit and a Japanese architectural firm led by Kengo Kuma was officially unveiled during Lasvit’s presentation Laterna Magica at Euroluce 2017, Milan. The Yakisugi collection is inspired by the ancient Japanese technique for preserving construction timber by charring its surface. Kengo Kuma explains that the idea behind Yakisugi collection is about questioning the materiality of glass and natural wooden texture. The crackled texture of Lavit’s new lighting collection was created by blowing molten glass into dry wooden moulds.

Mia

Mia is a family of nomadic lamps designed by Michel Charlot for the Spanish outdoor furniture company Kettal. The lamp is built around an acid-treated glass diffuser, which is protected by a large polypropylene lampshade. Both are held in place by a clever wire structure. One of Kettal’s wishes was to have the lamps completely waterproof, which was achieved – allowing for a wide range of applications and making it suitable for outdoor use. The Mia series comprises multiple variations, including a small battery powered lamp.

Yoruba Rose

With Yoruba Rose table lamp, German lighting designer Ingo Maurer continues his exploration of using Japanese paper to create light objects. A shell-like shaped lamp was launched during 2017 Euroluce fair as a prototype and will be available this autumn. The sheet of paper is almost circularly stretched on light metal wires and strives upwards. Like his previous products of the MaMoNouchies series, Japanese paper is treated in several steps in Dagmar Mombach’s factory until it reaches the desired shape. An LED module with a heat sink is installed inside and the module was developed by Maurer specifically for the MaMoNouchies. The light is warm and soft, and can hardly be distinguished from conventional halogen light.
