Salone del Mobile 2016: Our favorites from Salone Satellite

With approximately 650 projects on exhibit, 19th edition Salone Satellite, the most important event in the world of young designers, looked to the future with the theme “New materials, New design”, exploring the latest that new material science offers.

The 2016 winner of the First Prize is Studio Philipp Beisheim (Germany) with “Inflatable Sidetable”, an inflatable table developed as a response to the consumer society, and made of Hypalon, a highly durable silicon-based material used in the industrial field.

Mexican designer Jorge Diego Etienne presented Círculos, a collection of home objects that explore the relationship of a flat geometric figure translated into a three dimensional design. He says: “Each of these objects use the circle as a primary element of form and structure, creating dialogue between the volumes that construct them. The main element of the collection is the Lounge Chair, built from a tubular structure of two offset intersected circles, conforming the seat and rest.”

Austrian designer Louisa Koeber presented “Get hooked” collection, consisting of stackable metal wall hooks in vibrant colours, patterned fans, metal chair and Split table legs, which are made from one piece of bended tube that is split up on both sides.

“The cut reveals the intimate inside showing a coloured surface. I like playful designs, using different colours and patterns,” says Koeber. “I would like to see this chair and table legs produced, but just being here and having the opportunity to exhibit in Milan is enough.”

This year, one of the most interesting studios was Xuberance, the Chinese company founded by Steven Ma together with partners Bin Lu and Leirah Wang.  Last year Xuberance took home the First Prize Award at Salone Satellite for its line of 3D printed lamps while this year they presented 3D printed chair.
