Samovar Carpets reproduces Van Gogh’s Starry Night for Dubai exhibition

Family-owned carpet makers Samovar Carpets has unveiled a reproduction of Dutch painter, Vincent van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ painting – hand-knotted into a traditional Tibetan carpet.

The carpet reproduction has been unveiled as part of Van Gogh Alive, a multi-sensory exhibition created by Grande Exhibitions, which is currently on show at Dubai Design District.

The exhibition provides a sensory display of the post-modernist painter’s famous works and will be on display until 23 April. The project is held under the patronage of the UAE Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development, and is part of Dubai Art Season.

The 2.44 x 2.14 hand-woven carpet took 13 weeks to complete, and was produced by four Nepalese and Tibetan weavers, under the supervision of Erbil Tezcan, founder of Wool & Skill Rugs.

The carpet features over 40 colours, which is especially difficult when creating an intricate design with frequent colour changes. The majority of the work required to produce the carpet was accomplished by hand using traditional Tibetan weaving techniques.

Once the weaving was complete, the carpet was washed, stretched, and dried on a rooftop in Kathmandu, Nepal, before being shipped to Dubai.

The original ‘Starry Night’ was produced in 1989, painted in van Gogh’s asylum room in Saint-Remy-de-Provence in France. The intensity of colours and composition of the artwork makes it one of the painter’s most highly regarded works, in addition to being one of the most recognisable paintings in history.

Additionally, Samovar Carpets has teamed up with philanthropic organisation, Dubai Cares, to set up a silent auction for the carpet reproduction of ‘Starry Night’, with all proceeds from the auction and sale going towards the initiative’s education programs in developing countries.

Last year, during Dubai Design Week, Lebanese designer Nada Debs also unveiled a carpet collection which has been hand-woven by Afghan women weavers in Kabul.
