This past month, Commercial Interior Design had the opportunity to visit the prominent tiles fair Cevisama in Valencia, Spain.
With the rise of architectural projects in the Middle East, the region’s tastes have seeped into European design, as we witnessed a rise in ornate patterns, bright colours and elaborate designs with gold accents dominating the colour schemes.
These tiles feature elaborate textures as well as decorative and relief elements that turn each piece into an ornamental jewel. Some even have spectacular high gloss finishings that create unique lighting effects for interior spaces.
In contrast to the more bold and opulent designs comes the continuing trends of natural and minimal aesthetics, with ceramic and porcelain tiles recreating the essence of stone and wooden veneers. And since the popularisation of the new Ink Jet printer for tiles, the natural recreations look almost identical to the original materials since the printer also develops authentic and specialised texture types to create a maximum effect.
Metallic finishings have also become popular, growing stronger by the season, with trends gearing towards more rustic interiors including shades of gold, silver, matte and corten steel, giving a more industrial look and copper adding a traditional touch.
Another big step in ceramic and porcelain wall and flooring is the sizes with larger tiles becoming more accessible in the market and more fashionable as well, appearing almost as a single flooring or wall piece.
“The new trend at the moment is to go bigger and bigger [with tile sizes] and evade all joints,” said Laurent Justel, export area manager at Incalco, who print 1x1m tiles, an extraordinary achievement in the industry.
Opposing the larger tile trends are the small, scattered tiles that are architecturally influenced and inspired by shapes and cuts, some creating optical illusions and others evoking the blocking techniques of the past.
Experimentation with tiles has lead to this trend, where instead of producing dozens of small scale tiles; manufacturers are now printing standard or large sized tiles, later cutting them to produce either a brick or scattered effect.
Peronalisation has also been a hard hitter for the past two years with the popularisation of the Ink Jet printer where clients can use the digital printing system to print photographs or images that they prefer and ones that cannot be re-created. Clients can choose which colour glaze and decor to apply and whether to conclude with a glossy or matte finishing.
Another popular trend for wall and flooring is the vintage, shabby-chic country look that adds comfort and warmth to any interior space.
