Aecom to project manage $2.2bn Istanbul scheme

Aecom has been announced as project manager of Phase 1a of Turkey’s first biomedical science park, Bio Istanbul.

The news comes a year after Davis Langdon, an Aecom company, was appointed cost and program manager on the project.

The $2.2bn development consists of three district campuses including the Istanbul Children’s Hospital designed by Gmur Architekten, Switzerland, an R&D commercial office park by Rafael de La- Hoz, Spain and 150 residential units by Turkish office Tabanlioglu and Saunders Architecture, Norway.

All three concepts designs are now complete with a plan to accommodate 15,000 residents and 20,000 working commuters.

“Bio Istanbul has the potential to dramatically improve the level of medical care for the people of Turkey while also positioning Turkey to become the leading centre for pharmaceutical and advanced biomedical research for southeastern Europe and the Middle East,” commented David Whitehouse, Aecom’s managing director for CIS and Turkey.

The project is built to meet LEED/BREAM standards and will incorporate smart city infrastructure initiatives, an integrated transport network with an intra-site tramway and a comprehensive site security system.
