Aedas has won the accolade of World’s Largest Practice after three years in the number two spot in the WA 100 (World Architecture annual survey).
The recognition comes as a result of phenomenal growth in Asia for the company, where turnover increased by a quarter, surpassing the previous year’s 15% rise.
Virtually every one of the 364 architects who joined the practice this year is working in China with a handful in Singapore.
“Throughout Asia, we are seeing signs of rapid growth,” said Keith Griffiths, chairman, Aedas.
“Shanghai is expected to double its workload and offices such as Singapore are also seeing growth.”
On the mainland, Shanghai and Beijing were the best performers last year, with the practice doubling the number of staff in these and its other main Chinese studio, Chengdu.
This year, the firm expects to recruit somewhere in the region of 25 to 50 architects to each of its small regional offices in Chongqing, Dalian and Wuhan.
The practice recently shut its Turin and Belgrade offices and is predicting another difficult year, due in part to the EU debt crisis.
It opened its first Canadian office, on the back of three stations it is designing in Toronto, but little else is happening in North America.
While staff numbers have shrunk in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Griffiths said its continuing presence there is a sign of Aedas’s confidence that there is still work to be done in those two emirates as well as the wider Gulf region.
