Hardwood report to help Middle East specifiers

International trade association American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) has completed its Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) research of American Hardwoods by PE International, a sustainability and consulting firm.

Following a previous meeting, a critical review panel approved the LCA report, which covers 19 different US hardwood lumber species.

It will be used by AHEC to build species profiles and increase the profile of projects that use US hardwoods.

“The hope is that providing science-based information on the environmental credentials of American hardwoods, architects and specifiers in the Middle East will be able to select the material on the basis of full environmental disclosure,” said Roderick Wiles, AHEC director for Africa, Middle East, India and Oceania (pictured).

Once the report is formally approved, PE International will use it to accumulate representative Environment Product Declarations (EPDs) for US hardwood lumber. This will be used to establish ratings within green building systems and sustainable building codes.
