Asymptote proposes futuristic bridge for Saadiyat Island

Asymptote Architects has unveiled a new design for Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island, the Sheikh Khalifa Monument bridge, which draws inspiration from  the sea and dune scapes, sails, wings and fluid dynamics.

Having already designed the Yas Hotel in Abu Dhabi, this new concept combines ETFE, aluminum as well as composite surfaces and components.

The modular tessellation of the architecture incorporates elements from the local tradition of architectural patterns, mosaics and ornate screens.

The use of photovoltaic cells embedded into the fabric shells also provide a sustainably responsive kinetic lighting system.

Saadiyat Island will soon to be home to many other landmark structures including the Zayed National Museum which will open in 2016, the Louvre Abu Dhabi by Jean Nouvel and Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
