Abu Dhabi General Services (Musanada) has awarded Atkins a contract to design the infrastructure for a $2.1bn (£1.3bn) Emirati community in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
The North Wathba Urban Development is a 42 km² social infrastructure scheme that will eventually house a community of 130,000 people, and meet local needs with international design standards.
Atkins’ role involves the design and provision of tender documentation for all aspects of the development, from enabling works and road infrastructure through to district cooling and utilities.
“This is an important and far-reaching project for Abu Dhabi which will provide an excellent quality Emirati neighbourhood, including links to public transport networks and high levels of sustainable design,” said Dr. Ghassan Ziadat, director of infrastructure and regional head of bridges for Atkins.
The North Wathba Master plan was drawn up by Abu Dhabi’s Urban Development Council (UPC), and includes housing, civic, institutional and commercial buildings, as well as parks and open spaces.
Atkins was already the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) consultant for the project.
