BIG breaks ground on education centre for Faroe Islands

Danish firm BIG has broken ground on a 19,200m2 education centre in the hills outside Torshavn, the capital of the autonomous Denmark province of Faroe Islands.

The Marknagil Education Centre will combine three institutions under one roof – Faroe Islands Gymnasium, Torshavns Technical College and Business College of Faroe – to become the largest education building in the country’s history.

Providing for more than 1,200 students and 300 teachers, the project is designed as a vortex, integrating the site’s gradient, and radiating out toward the surrounding environment.

At the school’s heart, an open rotunda space creates a natural gathering point across floor levels and academic interests.
