Big Table by Alain Gilles selected for design show

Bonaldo’s Big Table by Alain Gilles has been selected for the ‘20 Essentials’ initiative in Knokke, Belgium.

A total of 20 design products, selected by Joost Vanhecke and Moniek Bucquoye, will be showcased in the summer exhibition from July 15 to August 31.

‘20 Essentials’ is the name of the temporary store set to open in Knokke, an exclusive Belgian tourists’ resort.

The project curators, Vanhecke and Bucquoye selected 20 products which – in their opinion are deemed essential.

“This world constantly brings new products onto the market. Many of these products are created for mass consumption and especially for the economic benefits which ensue for the manufacturers,” said Vanhecke.

“At the basis of ’20 Essentials’ lies the conviction that only a few of these products are actually capable of making the difference and of bringing added value to our lives.”

Big Table, designed by Gilles for Bonaldo, was picked for its original design, making it an icon.

It is a large, functional table which, although created in traditional materials like steel, wood and glass, is characterised by original design, so that the perception of the product changes depending on the angle from which it is viewed.

The legs are laser-cut steel plates and each one has a different width that highlights the different shades and nuances. Big Table is available in three colour versions: with white legs, multicoloured (coral red, orange, green and lilac) and in a combination of browns and greys (powder pink, brown, dove grey and amaranth).

Big Table has won the Good Design Award 2009.
