New bridge spans San Francisco Bay

Traffic is now flowing across the new eastern span of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge after the official opening of the bridge in San Francisco, California, USA.

After nearly 12 years of construction and an estimated price tag of $6.4bn, the new span opened a day ahead of schedule, on September 3.

The bridge is the world’s tallest self-anchored suspension tower. The California Department of Transportation which oversaw the project said the bridge is designed to withstand earth tremors.
