Architecture, urbanism and design firm Broadway Malyan has completed the 9,000 seat National Gymnastics Arena in Baku, Azerbaijan, after winning a competition to design the project in 2011.

The project included development from start to finish, encompassing architectural, interior and landscape design, as well as graphics, way-finding, signage and ticketing.

The shading strips that encircle the structure is a reference to rhythmic gymnasts, featuring three ribbon louvers that control daylight and solar gain and establish external views. At night, the dynamic lighting will illuminate the arena and appear as three distinct bands of Azerbaijan’s national colours.
