Chosen as number one in the Concept Design of the Year was a project which has attracted worldwide attention – Santiago Calatrava’s The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour.

The judges felt it showed how Dubai’s “ambition and creativity is still at the forefront across global design”.

Accepting the award Micael Calatrava said: It is an honour to be recognised by our colleagues and peers in the region. This is our first venture in the UAE and we couldn’t be prouder to win this award and this project means a tremendous amount to us.

“The client is an extremely special client and we wouldn’t have had the honour of being represented without the client offering us the idea of building such a wonderful tower. So we truly feel truly honoured to be here and doubly honoured that our peers have recognised that this is somewhat of a unique project.

“There is no great project without a great client and between the Ruler of Dubai and HE Mohamed Alabbar, we are in very good company when it comes to ambitious ideas and driven people who really wish us to project the best.

“What we wanted to do from the beginning was to create an inspiring structure that is not only a beacon of Dubai within the UAE, but also the UAE within the Gulf, and the UAE within the broader world. So our task was very clear from the start and that was to build something beautiful, elegant, and simple and one that in many ways balances with the Burj Khalifa.

“One of the things we wished to do was to play on the legacy that the Burj Khalifa has left and really complement it for what it is and what it stands for. So we chose subtler shapes and more subtle designs, to form a sort of conversation between the two buildings.”
