Abu Dhabi’s ultra-luxury fashion and dining precinct, The Galleria Al Maryah Island, which is set to open on August 6th, has recently unveiled its abstractly designed roof.
The roof, which cost $25m, was created by RFR and consists of a sculptural glass and steel atrium structure.
“The design brief was unusual as we inherited the existing building’s footprint and needed to design within these constraints,” said Jean Le Lay, director, RFR.
He continued: “We also had to bring together widely contradictory elements. On one side, sun exposition and humidity levels were a key concern. On the other hand, the design brief revealed a strong wish for delicate-looking aesthetics appearing to stretch seamlessly from landscaping to sky while complementing high-end retailers located below in the Great Room.”
The roof drapes across “The Great Room”, which designates the fashion and dining heart of The Galleria, while also providing a fluid extension of Abu Dhabi’s waterfront skyline.
The shape was completed by the expert use of joints and insulated joints, while the sand colour palette offers a natural continuation of the buildings surrounding environment.
