Developer imitates Zaha Hadid’s China project

Meiquan-22nd-Century-Chongqing

Zaha Hadid’s design for the Wangjing Soho complex in Beijing has been imitated in a project called Meiquan 22nd Century (pictured), which is under construction in southwestern Chinese city Chongqing.

The two projects are now competing for completion but according to German news site, Spiegel Online, Hadid stated that the copied project is currently in the lead in terms of construction.

Hadid’s Soho complex, featuring three pebble-shaped forms up to 200 metres high, was unveiled in August 2011 and is scheduled for completion by 2014.

Satoshi Ohashi, project director at Zaha Hadid Architects, told the German website: “It is possible that the Chongqing pirates got hold of some digital files or renderings of the project.”

The developer of the imitated project,  Chongqing Meiquan, denied accusations of piracy and stated: “Never meant to copy, only want to surpass.”
