Diane Thorsen of Perkins + Will has been crowned with the distinction of Interior Designer of the Year at the 2014 Commercial Interior Design Awards.
Described as being “a strong and empowering role model for emerging talent in the region,” the judges also mentioned that Thorsen has “built, developed and inspired the dream team of creative designers at her company that are currently setting the standard” in the region.
They concluded by saying that her submittal and great track record made Thorsen stand out from a very talented shortlist of interior designers.
“It feels fantastic, I really wanted that. I think what makes a really great design leader is to be able to actually bring a team together to deliver sensational work, and I think that’s actually what it is. So we’ve got the most amazing team and it’s actually because of that that I can succeed, so it’s fantastic,” Thorsen said.
“It’s really not just about me, it’s about the people on my team and I think then I’ve really done my job. It’s fantastic, it’s a wonderful feeling.”
Thorsen spoke about what design means to her: ““I live, speak, breath, eat design. So that’s actually what it’s all about for me,” she said.
Speaking of competition, Thorsen explained: “I think that we have really good competition in the market, which I think is good because I really enjoy it. Not having good competition is sad for the industry, so I think we have really good designers. And we love competing in the market, but it’s really good and healthy competition; it’s not a war out there between us, which I think is healthy. And I think from that point of view, we just really care about our clients and about our design. And that’s what makes us – maybe better- than the rest. And it’s a bit of luck too. A bit of luck and lot of work!”
The Interior Design of the Year award recognises a professional, forward-thinking individual, who consistently delivers original, intelligent and effective design solutions for their clients.
Highly Commended for this category was Claudia Ney from LW Design Group who was praised for her unmatchable strength in hospitality design.
