Dubai has moved away from “architectural caricatures” and is now a force in the world of building design, according to Rem Koolhaas.
The Dutchman, aged 70, was speaking during a visit to the UAE where he addressed students at the American University of Sharjah.
“Dubai has escaped from its architectural caricatures,” Koolhaas said. “There’s a great evidence of sophistication and an emergence of local architects that recognise authenticity.”
The architect said he had a positive outlook on the region as it provided the opportunity for the dawn of something new. He also praised the involvement of the country’s rulers and the freedom they have given to designers to transform the landscape of the region.
