Dubai’s Municipality has confirmed that work on the $43.5 million Dubai Frame project is nearly complete and is on track to open next month.

The project, shaped like a window frame, is situated near the Star Gate games and rides area of Zabeel Park.

Dubai Frame will allow panoramic views of Old Dubai and the skyline of New Dubai from each side.

Moawya Abdul Rahman, head of structural engineering unit at Dubai Municipality, told Gulf News the sky bridge was completed last week

“The bridge was initially set to be completely made out of glass but, after careful consideration, it was decided to install a 25 square metre glass panel in the middle of it instead. Some people may be afraid to look down, and we wanted to make this iconic building an enjoyable experience for all,” he was quoted as saying.

Authorities estimate the landmark will attract around two million visitors a year.

Last year, a row broke out between Mexican architect Fernando Donis – who won a competition in 2009 to design the structure as his idea was selected from 926 designs in the ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Awards – and Dubai Municipality.

“The project is being transformed from being non-figurative architecture to an overscale figurative photo-frame. That is, from being a modern, public monument to a postmodern pastiche,” Donis wrote in an open letter.
