Dubai’s $272m Gate Avenue at DIFC passes 35% completion mark

Gate Avenue at DIFC has passed the 35% completion mark, according to Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), Construction Week reported.

With 85% of structural concrete work and 75% of concrete blockwork now complete, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) activities underway, the 6.1ha retail and leisure development is on course to open in H1 2018.

HLG Contracting, the firm that won the project’s $136.2m (AED500m) main contract in October 2016, has been awarded an additional $13.5m (AED49.5m) deal for surrounding infrastructure.

The latest award will see new and existing roads, car parking, and public realm works around the project integrated with the DIFC master plan, taking Gate Avenue at DIFC’s total value to more than $272m (AED1bn).

Work on this portion of the development is scheduled to commence in August 2017, and will complete in May 2018.

Nabil AlKindi, chief real estate officer at DIFC, said: “Work on the much-anticipated Gate Avenue at DIFC continues to build momentum towards the opening in 2018.

“Thanks to the remarkable work delivered by the construction team, the overall design and structure of the project has already started to take shape. We are now a few months away from seeing this flagship development come to life, marking a significant milestone in the delivery of DIFC’s 2024 strategy.”

Once completed, Gate Avenue at DIFC will link the podium levels of all buildings in the area, from Gate Building to Central Park Towers. The project will boast more than 200 dining, retail, and entertainment outlets, and a new mosque.

“What makes Gate Avenue at DIFC special is that it reflects everything that DIFC stands for as a world-class global destination,” said AlKindi.

“The premium infrastructure and entertainment offerings currently available in DIFC, combined with the urban and cosmopolitan fabric of Dubai, give this development a unique identity and proposition that makes it a natural destination for [the area’s] existing community of over 21,000 people, as well as other Dubai residents and our growing number of visitors,” he added.

Unit handovers for Gate Avenue at DIFC are expected to begin later this year, allowing retailers to commence fit-out works.

More than 3.5 million man-hours have been dedicated to the project to date.
