The annual Emporis Skyscraper Awards has declared Dubai’s 75-storey twisting Cayan Tower located in Dubai Marina as one of the best projects more than 100 metres in height completed last year.
Cayan Tower, designed by Burj Khalifa’s Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) as well as local specialists Khatib & Alami Dubai, scooped the fourth prize.
The Emporis judges said: “The building’s twisted shape reduces wind forces on the tower and channels the wind in such a way that its forces are unable to organize itself.”
Taking seven years until being finally completed last June, the Cayan Tower was commended by the judges for its shape in which each floor is rotated by 1.2 degrees to achieve the total 90-degree twist.
London’s 306-metre Shard was awarded the top prize from designs of over 300 skyscrapers from around the world.
