Dubai’s resident dinosaur gets a name

The UAE’s oldest inhabitant has finally got a name – DubaiDino.

The 155million year old 24-metre long, 7.6-metre high Diplodocus Longus dinosaur which is current standing tall in Dubai Mall was unnamed until an on-line competition was organized by developer Emaar.

The name was put forward by Johara Al Bayedh, a bank manager with Emirates NBD and Saudi national, who was one of more than 6,000 people who took part in the social media event.

Her prize included a trip for four to Jurassic Park at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, return flights and six nights in a hotel.

Emaar had unveiled the vegetarian dinosaur skeleton in the mall’s Grand Atrium on March 10 and asked visitors to suggest a name.

The remains of DubaiDino were discovered in 2008 at the Dana Quarry in Wyoming, US and 90% of the fossil’s bones are original and were found intact at the excavation site.

Leaflets with information about the dinosaur state: “No comparable exhibit, with nearly all bones completing the skeleton, exists anywhere. Yes, the dinosaur before you is as real as it gets and complete.”
