Domotex Middle East 2011, a trade show dedicated to the floor covering industry, will focus this year on environmentally friendly products which are set to be a key trend in the Qatari flooring industry.
“In Qatar, which is expected to see $22,149m worth of construction contracts awarded by 2012, there is a growing awareness of the environmental impact of the materials used for floor coverings; from the energy it takes to make a product, to the energy saving benefits green products can provide, to biodegradability when disposing of the materials,” said Angela Schaschen, managing director, Deutsche Messe Dubai Branch, organiser of Domotex Middle East.
“With the global green building materials market expected to reach $406bn by 2015, demand for green floor coverings is growing every year,” she added.
Qatar has developed the Qatar Sustainability Assessment System, a green rating system which is tailored for the requirements of the region. The system aims to minimise the environmental impact of the built environment while addressing the regional needs and environment of Qatar.
Additionally, the Qatar World Cup 2022 is said to have an eco-friendly focus with sustainable practices being used throughout the project.
“The Qatar World Cup 2022 will present some interesting flooring requirements, the event will require everything from sports flooring to carpeting for hotels, and with the focus on green solutions there is significant business potential in this sector,” added Schaschen.
She said there is a lot of interest in products that balance sustainability with profitability, and expects the trend to become popular in the Middle East.
“Across the region, we are increasingly seeing that new buildings, whether they are designed for office, hotel or residential use, are more attractive to the market if they have green credentials,” added Schaschen.
Domotex Middle East 2011 will take place at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre during September 12-14, 2011.
