UAE airline Emirates has signed a US$56 million sponsorship deal for the Wilkinson Eyre-designed Thames cable car, set to open before the 2012 Olympics.

Site work has started on the US$79 million project, which will be able to carry 2,500 people per hour.

The 1.1km journey will take five minutes between the two new stations of Emirates Greenwich Peninsula and Emirates Royal Docks.
