At the World Green Economy Summit (WGES), experts discussed the tips for building a green economy.
The panel included Ivano Iannelli, CEO of Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence, Tong Yen Ho, CEO of Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City, Xavier Joseph, CEO of Veolia, Chanho Park, Director of GGGI Abu Dhabi, Finn Mortensen, executive director of State of Green, Dr. Corrada Clini, director general of sustainable development, climate & energy at the Italian Ministry for Environment, Land & Sea and was moderated by Sandrine Dixson-Decleve, director at the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership.
1. Use emotions. “It doesn’t have to be passive,” said Iannelli. “It is our only tool to actually get others convinced.”
2. Make sure it is challenging best practices and embracing change. This allows innovation because it allows new practices to penetrate to businesses.
3. Keep it simple. We need to keep the message simple: Dubai launched a green economy for sustainable development. It doesn’t get any simpler than that. We’re actually measuring the impact of these transactions, so we want to support the private sector with engaging with key areas of the economy.
4. Give it vision. It takes us the same amount of work to do something small and something extremely big. Leadership in this country has told us not to fear the challenge. Don’t be intimidated by time.
5. Give it center stage. We want it to be big, we want it to have the legitimacy the support and we do want it to be recognisable.
6. Come up with a comprehensive or national strategy that will span across all the region and across all sectors.
7. Don’t think of it as a trade-off between practicality and idealism. To achieve green results, it doesn’t mean you have to compromise either. Transitioning doesn’t mean that you need to immediately go to new technologies.
8. Political willingness. When there is political willingness, there is always a technological solution.
9. Target involvement and engagement. This could be at a national level, discussing good examples, and sharing good ideas, especially with the youth. Try to target perceptions and attitudes.
10. Don’t disconnect research with policy while creating a green agenda, but rather bring innovation and research at the time of policy making.
