Foster + Partners designs a chair for people working in busy public spaces

Amid the debate on the benefits and disadvantages of open-plan versus closed offices, Foster + Partners has designed a chair with a high-back, cocoon-inspired design, which provides privacy to people working in busy public spaces.

Produced by Italian brand Poltrona Frau, the Cove chair has been designed to function as a mini office. Its enveloping form features a wide, comfortable seat, a built-in USB charging point, an optional mains power supply, and a table, which can be used as an informal desk.

The chair was unveiled at airport conference Passenger Terminal Expo in Stockholm recently. The chair can be installed in clusters in public spaces, such as airport lounges or building receptions.

The design allows users to sit at the desk while using their laptop. The ribs of cushion at the back of the chair expand to form ridges, which can be used as armrests, and the inner and outer surfaces can be customised in a variety of leather and fabric upholstery.
