French architect’s ‘seascraper’ set for construction

A French architect has designed a cross between a skyscraper and a boat for ocean research, with construction set to start next year.

Jacques Rougerie’s SeaOrbiter would house a team of 18-22 researchers that are able to spend the entire voyage underwater, reported Dezeen.

Rougerie’s concept was developed following 30 years of research into marine architecture.

The 58-metre-high boat is made from recycled aluminium, weighing 500 tonnes.

It is currently on exhibition at the 2012 World Expo in Korea.
