DesignMENA Summit headliner Sou Fujimoto is on the star-studded list in the running for the contract to design a massive art gallery in Qatar’s capital Doha.
The Arab Engineering Bureau, David Chipperfield, Adam Khan and Heneghan Pen have also made the longlist.
The competition, run by Malcolm Reading Consultants, attracted 489 entries from 56 different countries.
The proposed 93,000m2 “Art Mill” gallery will sit in the heart of Doha’s waterfront cultural quarter alongside the existing Museum of Islamic Art designed by IM Pei and Jean Nouvel’s National Museum of Qatar which is currently under construction.
The contest called for an architect to transform the large Qatar Flour Mills site by reusing, adapting and extending its existing grain silos to create ‘one of the world’s leading art galleries’.
The scheme is expected to contain between 60,000m² and 80,000m² of gross space with galleries, education, conference and event space alongside conservation and storage areas.
Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, chairperson of Qatar Museums, said: “The number of designers interested in the Art Mills project surpassed our expectations. We are excited by the variety and range of interested talent and look forward to the outcome of the competition.
“To have the Museum of Islamic Art, built by I.M.Pei, the National Museum of Qatar by Jean Nouvel and the Art Mill development all within walking distance will give our community a unique cultural offering combining art, architecture and urban design.”
Competition organiser Malcolm Reading, added: “This is a strong list full of quality and promise. The selection is a profile of global creative DNA. It gives architects practising in very different cultures and contexts the opportunity to bring new perspectives and insights to a project brimming with imaginative possibility.”
The longlisted practices will now go on to the second stage of the competition where they will be asked to draw up strategies for the site and its links to the city.
A shortlist of five schemes will be revealed in early 2016 and these will go on to develop concept designs for the gallery before a winner is chosen.
