Sustainability and green flooring products were seen as a trend at Domotex Middle East 2011.

“We are increasingly seeing floor covering businesses respond to the market’s interest in environmentally friendly products and sustainable practices. Each year at Domotex Middle East we see more and more green innovations,” said Angela Schaschen, managing director, Deutsche Messe Dubai Branch, organiser of Domotex Middle East.

This year’s platinum sponsor, Al Abdullatif from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, produces green residential carpets made from 50% recycled plastic drinking bottles. The plastic is recycled and transformed into fibre that is then used in manufacturing the carpets.

“This product has the exact same look and feel as a carpet made from entirely new materials – the colours, smoothness of the carpet and designs are just the same,” said Abdullatif Al-Abdullatif, CEO, Al Abdullatif.

Exhibitor Balta from Belgium said the future of flooring lies in creating materials that can be fully recycled.

“Balta currently has a team dedicated to developing carpets and carpet tile products which will be 100% recyclable. We also place a strong emphasis on energy saving in our factories; we now have over 50,000 solar panels in three different factories to help generate clean energy,” said Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Group.

Wickham Hardwood Flooring, platinum sponsor of the Creative Flooring area at Domotex Middle East, had all its wooden flooring products come from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified suppliers. Wickham also has a zero waste policy, with all wood fibres produced in the manufacturing of its wooden flooring products being collected and reused for making wood pellets.

The Creative Flooring area of the show also features a live demonstration session on Sustainable Office Flooring Solutions hosted by Haima Carpet Tiles and Estillon.

Domotex Middle East is being held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from September 12-14, 2011.

    Dear Devina,

Glad to see that there are more and more sustainability initiatives in MENA. We hope that this will grow. We are an award winning (American Society of Interior Designers, NY) social enterprise based in Lebanon . We transform architectural salvage from destroyed traditional houses into lamps and other creative items and we employ the unemployable. 90% of our production is exported to the US, Europe and Japan because customers are sensitive to sustainability and our social mission. We find that more education is needed in the Arab world to make local citizens aware of the need to embrace sustainable products and socially responsible companies. Your reporting on the sustainability trend at Domotex is serving this purpose.

    Thank you!
