Grimshaw architects has been selected to plan a range of recreational community faculties in Qatar set to create greater social environments.

The architects were chosen as part of a competition funded by the Qatar Olympic Committee, and are to provide a scheme that involves various sports including football, volleyball, basketball and handball.

The centre of the project features an elevated café that acts as a vibrant social hub, surrounded by courts and set against a backdrop of deserts and sand dunes.

For shading, fabric canopies have been created reminiscent of vernacular flowers. It also indicated important routes to seating areas.

Positioned within the landscape, the seating areas provide places for families to congregare and watch sporting events.

The scheme also includes a grey water recycling system to help irrigate the surrounding landscape.

“We are delighted to know our design will create highly accessible informal public space that enriches social activities while also developing athletic talent within the local community. This project provides an opportunity for Qatar to encourage all its residents to lead healthy lifestyles,” said Keith Brewis, partner at Grimshaw.
