Zaha Hadid’s spectacular Guangzhou Opera House was honoured by Architectural Record as the standout public project in China.
The 70,000m2 scheme was awarded ‘Best Public Project’ in the magazine’s Good Design Is Good Business China Awards 2012.
Cathleen McGuigan, editor-in-chief, Architectural Record, said: “The building boom in China has brought with it strikingly innovative and useful designs.
“Today we celebrate the best of these projects, illustrating that beautiful buildings can also be brilliantly practical as well, fusing form and function for the greater good.”
Completed in 2010, the building was designed to host Chinese and Western operas, as well as being an open and accessible civic centre.
