Seven-time Grammy winner and Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.i.am has a novel view on the future of 3D printers – he thinks they will eventually create synthetic humans.
The producer, rapper and entrepreneur admitted his views were controversial.
“Eventually 3D printing will print people,” Will.i.am said. “I’m not saying I agree with it, I’m just saying what’s fact based on plausible growth in technology.
“Unfortunately that is the reality, but at the same time it pushes humanity to have to adhere to new responsibilities. So new morals, new laws and new codes are going to have to be implemented.”
Will.i.am said he also could see a time when Star Trek-style “transporter” technology became feasible and bodies could be broken down into component molecules and rearranged elsewhere.
“You’re starting with beef, and leathers, and body parts, eventually it will get more complex,” he said. “It’s basically ‘Beam me up, Scotty’, a 3D printer that disintegrates the source.”
His views came after experts discussed the likely direction 3D printing will go in.
Michael Renard, executive vice president of bioprinting company Organovo, said it could one day be used to produce replacement tissue, vessels and organs.
“We’re working with small pieces of tissue at the moment – a small piece of blood vessel or liver,” he says. “Once you have the cells ready, we can print something in a few hours.”
