Istanbul Design Biennial 2018 names Jan Boelen as curator

Belgian design critic and teacher Jan Boelen has recently been chosen for curator of the Istanbul Design Biennial next year.

Founder and artistic director of Z33 House for Contemporary Art in Belgium, Boelen is also the artistic director of Atelier LUMA, an experimental laboratory in France. He also heads the Social Design masters programme at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

The fourth artistic director of the Istanbul Design Biennial, Boelen’s appointment was chosen by an advisory board consisting of the Design Museum chief curator Justin McGuirk and Dresden Museum of Decorative Arts director and e-flux editor Nikolaus Hirsch.

Taking place between 22 September and 4 November 2018, the biennial is a showcase for innovative design and takes place every two years in Istanbul. It’s upcoming edition is hosted by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts.
