French architect Jean Nouvel has designed a new culture complex entitled ‘R4’ located in the île Seguin, a small island on the River Seine.
The area is currently undergoing an array of new project developments forming a “small town” with Nouvel’s project expected to become the artistic district of the area.
Featuring two main volumes, spanning from the northern to southern banks of the river, connected by a steel beam bridge, the R4 allows visitors to easily access the art galleries and exhibition halls of the buildings.
Constructed in steel and concrete, the buildings will be almost devoid of any walls.
It will include exhibition areas, galleries, and art studios, salesroom sand storerooms, some of which will be open to visitors, digital platforms and multi-purpose stages.
In addition, landscape roof terraces will extend the exposition areas outdoors, offering views that overlook the island and the city.
The project is targeted for completion by 2016.
