The US Green Building Council (USGBC) is celebrating the 10,000th LEED commercial building, following the certification of a modest community centre in Santa Cruz, California.
Launched by Rob Watson and the USGBC in 1993, LEED now boasts over 80 million m2 of built environment certified in 120 different countries.
Speaking to Middle East Architect, Watson said: “It’s amazing to me that a system created in America actually has buildings in Yemen, and other places that I would not imagine them to be in. LEED really is a green building system like no other.”
Designed by Californian practice Boone/Low Architects and Planners, the community centre will provide a platform for information and referrals on childbirth and parenting, health education and services, youth and senior programmes, food distribution and other community needs.
