Arup is to masterplan new lighting for a large part of the Turkish city of Istanbul.
The project includes lighting concepts for 120 heritage buildings, 20 lighting design projects for selected landmarks and lighting master plans for the main sub-districts.
This new master plan also aims to provide a comprehensive framework for future lighting initiatives – both for public and private developments.
Şebnem Gemalmaz, project leader, said: “The master plan will approach the city within three different dimensions – ecological, economic and social – to create a legible nocturnal image of Istanbul.
“Providing social security and safety is the main form-giver of lighting master plans. Safety in public spaces creates liveliness and night time freedom; hence reinforces the night time economy.”
The plan will also focus on new technologies and alternative lighting solutions to underline environmental issues.
