The walled city of Marrakech in Morocco has been voted top tourist destination across the globe.
Website TripAdvisor has unveiled the world’s top rated destinations in its seventh annual Travellers’ Choice awards, with the city – famous for its traditional Arabic architecture – in the top spot for the first time.
Half of the top 10 cities are located in Europe and for the second consecutive year New York, the best rated US destination, failed to make the top 10.
Last year’s runner up, Rome, dropped five places to seventh and London slipped from third to sixth. The UK capital is one of only three destinations to have retained a top ten ranking five years in a row, but is also the most expensive, with an average room rate of around $250.
Vietnam’s capital Hanoicame fourth on the list and offers the cheapest hotel value, with an average summer room cost of less than $45 a night. Siem Reap in Cambodia – voted into second place – is another bargain option at just under $60.
The list is based on t reviews and opinions from TripAdvisor travellers. The winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews as well as ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions in destinations worldwide.
TripAdvisor spokesperson James Kay said: “The competition among global tourist destinations has never been tougher. A combination of low average booking rates and fantastic traveller reviews on TripAdvisor has helped Asian, African and Eastern European destinations steal a march on old favourites like New York and Rome.”
