A monochrome fashion store in China has received the 2016 World Interior of the Year prize for challenging conventional ideas about a retail fashion store, according to the judges.

“Store brand and architectural image work in harmony with a sensitivity to surface and details,” they said.

The Heike fashion concept store is designed by architects Shanwei Weng and Jiadie Yuan, founders of AN Design, located in a warehouse-like space in Hangzhou.

A black box set at the centre of the store holds a staircase which takes visitors up through a wedge-shaped bulk, connecting two floors of the interior. The designers dubbed the project ‘Black Cant System’ for this very reason.

Geometric clothing rails display the clothes, with other stand-out elements including fan-shaped handrails, aluminium chandeliers, and large mirrors.

Additionally, an underground museum in Poland has won the title World Building of the Year 2016 at the World Architecture Festival.
